Hi Everybody, Please look at here, does anybody know this word? Those with a decent vocabulary should know it. I’ll give you 5 seconds. 1-2-3-4-5. OK, Time’s up.

During the past 5 seconds, don’t you have the impulsion to refer to Youdao installed in your smart-phone, I guess you do, right?

To seek help from smart-phone, from Ipad, from the Internet has become a common habit for many of us. Thanks to the development of modern network information technology, now we have access to vast stores of information, which tremendously reduces the burden on our memory. But on the other hand, we are becoming lazier and lazier and increasingly dependent on the internet. When asked by the teacher in class, when assigned a paper task, when invited to give an opinion, we often feel inclined to search the Internet in the first place, instead of thinking for ourselves for a few seconds. It is no exaggeration to say many of us have poor independent thinking ability.

But when you come to think about it, is the application of modern technology the only cause or more exactly, the root cause of our weak independent thinking ability? I’m afraid not.

Then what is the root cause of it? Before illustrating on that, I wanna share with you a scene from an Indian movie I recently watched, called Stars on Earth, directed by Aamir khan, the leading actor of the Three idiots. The protagonist of Like Stars on the Earth is a little boy called Ishaan, he is a naughty boy. He is full of imaginations, good at painting, an excellent observer of life, but few people know about it. He is better known by his teachers and classmates for his weak reading ability, poor maths scores and eccentric behaviors and expressions. One day in class Ishaan is asked by the teacher to give his understanding of a poem from the text book. He just utters some seemingly confusing abstract things, but extraordinarily philosophical. It must be beyond the understanding of his classmates, and even his teacher. Because the teacher gets angry over his answer and asks another student to give the right answer. Of course that student does a good job. But after class Ishaan’s desk mate tells him, “I think you are the one who really understands the poem, the other one just poured out what has been stuffed in his head.”

Maybe some of you haven’t watched the movie, but I’m sure this scene can’t be too familiar to all of us here. To be asked to give the right answer has been the major theme, or maybe the only theme of the education we received in the past 10 to 20 years. But to give wrong answers, to make mistakes is the first step towards independent thinking. However since the very beginning of our school life, we’ve been gradually deprived of our right to make mistakes, by all the grillings in the class, by all the marks on the papers, by all the right and wrong judgments given by others, as a result we gradually lost confidence of independent thinking.

It is so sad, even we can throw our smart-phones away, we can’t throw the chains on our brains away.

What shall we do now? I won’t give the "right answer" here. I invite you to think, to think for us in the later life, to think for our children in the future.

Thank you.
